Prescriptions and how Pharmacy First services could help

Ordering repeat prescriptions

The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are:

  • using the NHS account (through the NHS website or via the NHS App on your mobile)
  • using the GP online system: SystmOnline

These accounts show you all your repeat medicines and dosages, so you can pick the ones you need.

You can also fill out a repeat prescriptions request form and bring the paper form to the surgery, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 6pm.

We are also able to take repeat prescription requests over the phone and by email.

Registering for SystmOnline – To register, please visit our reception with two forms of identification and complete a brief application. We kindly ask that one of the forms of identification is a photo i.d., such as a current passport or a photo driving licence.

Collecting your prescription

As demand for prescriptions is always high please allow a minimum of two working days to get a prescription ready. For example, if you drop it off on Monday, you can pick it up after 5:00 PM on Wednesday. The pharmacist will normally require seven more days to prepare your prescription. You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from.

Don’t forget to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription. This is called nominating a pharmacy.

Queries about your medication

If you have questions about your medicine, a pharmacist can help. Either our Pharmacist in house, although there may be a wait for an appointment, or by seeing a Pharmacist in one of our local Pharmacies. They can also answer questions about over the counter medicines you can buy without a prescription.

How Pharmacies Can Help – Pharmacy First

Local Pharmacies are a convenient and accessible way to receive healthcare advice, treatment, and support without needing a GP appointment. Pharmacists are trained healthcare professionals who can help with a wide range of minor illnesses and medication concerns.

Advice from a Pharmacist

Pharmacists can provide expert advice on common conditions, including:

  • Coughs, colds, and sore throats
  • Ear infections and earache
  • Aches, pains, and headaches
  • Skin conditions, rashes, and insect bites
  • Digestive issues, such as indigestion or constipation

They can also help with medicine-related concerns, such as:

  • How to use your medication correctly.
  • Managing side effects or interactions with other medicines.
  • Choosing the right over-the-counter treatment.

If your condition requires further assessment, the pharmacist can refer you to a GP or other healthcare professional.

Treatment from a Pharmacist (Pharmacy First Service)

Under the Pharmacy First Scheme, many pharmacies can now provide prescription medication without a GP appointment for certain conditions.

Conditions Treated with Prescription Medicine at Pharmacies

Condition Age Eligibility
Impetigo 1 year and over
Infected insect bites 1 year and over
Earache 1 to 17 years
Sore throat 5 years and over
Sinusitis 12 years and over
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) (women only) 16 to 64 years

If you do not meet the age criteria, pharmacists can still:

  • Offer advice and self-care recommendations.
  • Suggest over-the-counter treatments.
  • Refer you to a GP if further treatment is needed.

If you visit a pharmacy with one of these conditions, the pharmacist will:

  • Offer advice and treatment options.
  • Prescribe medication if eligible under Pharmacy First.
  • Refer you to a GP if necessary.
  • Update your GP health record, but your information will not be shared with anyone else.

Most pharmacies can provide prescription medicine for these conditions, but contact them before visiting to check availability.
