Think Pharmacy First

When you or your family feel unwell, you might not always need to see your GP. Pharmacists are medicine experts and can give you free advice on treating many common illnesses and minor issues.

Pharmacy First allows residents to go directly to their pharmacist for treatment of certain minor issues without needing a GP prescription first. Medication is free if you’re exempt from prescription charges. If you usually pay for prescriptions, you’ll pay the regular price for any medicine provided. To use this service, you need to be registered at one of the Isle of Wight surgeries.

Your appointment

However you choose to contact us, we may offer you a consultation:

  • by phone
  • face to face at the surgery
  • on a video call
  • by text or email

Phone, video call, text, or email appointments can be more flexible and often mean you get help faster.

If you need help with your appointment

Please tell us:

  • if there’s a specific doctor, nurse or other health professional you would prefer to respond
  • if you would prefer to consult with the doctor or nurse by phone, face-to-face, by video call or by text or email
  • if you need an interpreter
  • if you have any other access or communication needs

Home visits

The practice can arrange home visits for patients who are too sick or frail to come in. If you think you need a home visit, please call us as early as possible (before 10:00 AM). This helps plan around other appointments, as it’s harder to arrange visits later in the day. When you request a home visit, we’ll ask for some important information.

The practice can only provide home visits for patients who are unable to leave their home, and this decision will be made by the doctor.

Further information

These situations don’t need urgent GP appointments and can usually be managed in advance. If you’re requesting an appointment for these reasons, please let the receptionist know. They can help arrange other support for you

When booking an appointment or home visit, please tell the receptionist your preferred doctor’s name. Sometimes, we may not be able to guarantee you’ll see your chosen GP, but we’ll do our best to meet your request.
You have the right to request a chaperone during your consultation or procedure at the surgery. This could be a nurse, healthcare assistant, or another suitable member of staff, with your agreement. If you’re unsure about having a chaperone, please contact the surgery to discuss this before your appointment.
If you become ill while away from home or living outside the practice area, a local GP can see you as a “temporary patient.” If you stay longer than three months, the GP may want to register you as a permanent patient. This is important for you, as it helps your new GP and your former GP share your medical history.
